Charles Edward “Chuck” Baker served on the Board of Commissioners from 1977-1980 as vice chair. During an interview last week, he recalled running against Corbin Roberts, who was a formidable opponent. Baker said the county was divided into three districts at the time.
He said in 1977 the chairman was chosen by a vote of board members after the election.
“We worked together. We had disagreements but agreed at the end. The board needs to have harmony and work together,” Baker said.
Baker said he did not run for re-election to the board in 1980, opting to run for tax commissioner instead because of changes in that office.
He did not succeed in the tax commissioner race, but he was appointed and served on the board of the Middle Georgia Area Planning Commission, now known as the Regional Commission.
