Qualifying for Jones County’s only local election on the May 20 ballot continues through Friday, with several candidates already signed up for the race.

Monday was the first day to qualify for one of the contested Board of Education positions, and qualifying will end at noon Friday, March 7.

Board of Education candidates for the 2014 election as of Monday afternoon were Tony Blash, District One, who was the first to qualify, Richard Cozort Jr. and Ken Hamilton, also District One, and J.D. Collins, District Three.

Incumbent Board Chairman Ginger Baily qualified Tuesday morning.

May 20 is the date for all primary elections in Georgia, which makes this week the qualifying period for all state and federal partisan contests. State elected officials, including the office of governor, representatives, and senators, will be qualifying in Atlanta.

For Jones County, in addition to the Board of Education election, voters will have the question of the renewal of the county’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax on the ballot.
