The commissioners were not anxious to grant the request of Charlotte Sullivan and Jo Ann Adkins, who were at the May 6 meeting asking for speed breakers to be taken up on Rebel Drive, Whitaker Road, Confederate Road, Stonewall Drive, and Baker Road.
The ladies had a petition with them containing the signatures of 51 people in those neighborhoods wanting the speed breakers removed.
The speed breakers were put in place in 2006, following another request brought to commissioners by George Scoville.
Board Chairman Preston Hawkins asked why the residents had changed their mind. “People who lived on these streets were adamant that they wanted speed breakers a few years ago,” he said.
Sullivan simply said that was then and the situation has changed.
