School Superintendent William Mathews said in an interview the day after the Feb. 5 event that school officials and the Jones County Sheriff’s Department are conducting separate investigations at his request, and everyone with any connection with the incident is being interviewed.
Fortunately, the abandoned student appears to be uninjured.
“I understand the concerns of the parents and I share those concerns. I wish there were more I could do,” the superintendent said. “We are trying to find out what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
A statement from the Sheriff’s Department dated Feb. 7 simply states the fact that a complaint was filed that a child was left alone on a school bus and their investigation determined no criminal intent or reckless conduct was involved.
The statement said mistakes were made but no criminal charges would be filed.
