City officials accept county’s reduced SPLOST percentage

After numerous meetings between Jones County and Gray elected officials, an agreement was forged last week for the division of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds.

The final split was 17.5 percent of SPLOST collections for the city, which means the county would receive 82.5 percent of the estimated $12 million in one-cent sales tax over a six-year period.

The 17.5 percent is expected to equal $2.1 million.

The six-year collection period is possible because of the agreement between the city and county. Otherwise, the maximum term for SPLOST collections is five years. The previous SPLOST began July 1, 2009, and will end June 30, 2015.

A vote to renew the SPLOST on the May 20 ballot ensures that there will be no gap in collections.

Meetings between the city and county began Jan. 21 and concluded with an agreement Feb. 20. The negotiations were not always pretty, but in the end it appeared both entities understood the importance of the agreement, and more importantly, getting the renewal of the sales tax passed by voters.

Sales tax funds are used for large projects, such as the purchase of patrol vehicles, firefighting gear, and road-building equipment.
