Councilman David Tufts made the motion for the final adoption of an ordinance to amend Gray’s voting districts at the Jan. 7 meeting, and Councilman Terrell Fulford seconded it. The vote to approve was unanimous, although Councilman Terry Favors was not at the meeting.
The final plan for the city’s voting districts was created at a committee meeting Oct. 16, 2012, and was put together by council members with the help of Nick Kouloungis of the Middle Georgia Regional Commission. The plan divides city residents with 839 in District 1, 592 in District 2, 766 in District 3, and 987 in District 4.
The desired variance is 10 percent among the districts, and the variance for this plan is 39 percent.
The first reading of the ordinance to amend the city’s charter to accommodate the new districts took place Nov. 5, 2012. The specifics of the new city district map are contained in the amendment and will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice for approval.
