A representative of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs who works with Community Development Block Grants attended a recent housing meeting to present the agency’s perspective on neighborhood revitalization.

The Nov. 22 meeting was held at the Jones County Senior Center, and housing chairman Donald Black introduced DCA representative Mary Alice Applegate.

The representative said she works exclusively with the CDBG program and explained that the process is competitive. She said, in 2012, 155 CDBG applications were submitted and 88 of those were funded.

Applegate said the grant program is federally funded, and in 2012, $42 million was available, and this year that amount was down to $33 million. The grants can be for single activities, such as housing, or multi-activity, such as housing plus infrastructure. Single activity applications have a maximum of $500,000, and that increases to $800,000 for multi-activity projects.

Applegate said nine housing applications were submitted in 2013 and three of them were funded.

She suggested those writing the grants for the April 2014 application attend an upcoming grant workshop in Macon. The workshop takes place Dec. 11-13 and will have a special section for housing.
