A foster parent and Jones County neighbor will be signing and promoting his newly published book this Saturday at Kema’s Hobby Bookstore.

Dr. John DeGarmo will be at Kema’s Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. signing copies of Fostering Love: One Foster Parent’s Journey, released in August.

The author is a Jasper County resident, and, in a press release about his book, DeGarmo states it chronicles his personal experience as a parent and foster parent. He said it’s about the trials and tribulations, the laughs, the tests, and the daily lives that he and his wife, Kelly, along with their three biological children, incorporate with foster children, both boys and girls, from ages two days old to 17. The family has been fostering children since 2002, and DeGarmo said his biological children were ages 5, 3, and 2, when the first foster child arrived.

He has worked as an English and drama teacher in central Georgia, managed a day-care center, hosted various radio shows throughout both the U.S. and Australia, where his wife is from, and even worked in the field of professional wrestling. The author is currently serving as a media specialist at both Jasper County High and Middle School. He recently earned his doctorate and he published his doctoral dissertation on the challenges that foster children face in public schools.

DeGarmo said he hopes readers of Fostering Love “get a better understanding of the system and a desire to help those in need. There are so many children today that need extra attention and a kind word.”
