This is definitely not the way the Greyhounds wanted to enter the region baseball playoffs.

“No, not at all,” Jones County coach Barry Veal said after his team lost its final two subregion games last week to fall from second to third in the standings, then lost the lead in the late innings to fall to West Laurens 8-4 in a non-region game at home on Monday to finish the regular season at 11-10.

The Greyhounds wound up with a 4-5 record in the subregion after losing on the road to Northside-Warner Robins 7-3 last Tuesday and to Houston County 8-0 on Thursday.

Now they must win two of three at Evans, the second seed in the east subregion, in the opening round of the Region 2-AAAAA playoffs to keep their season going.

They begin with a double-header at 4 p.m. on Thursday, and the third game if needed will be at 6 p.m. Friday.

Other first-round matchups are Warner Robins at Greenbrier, Grovetown at Houston County, and Lakeside-Evans at Northside-Warner Robins.

The first round winners, who all qualify for the state playoffs, will advance to the region semifinals on April 23. That will be a single game with the opponents determined by seeding of the teams remaining in the tournament. The semifinal winners meet for the region championship in a single game on April 26.
