Gray’s 2013 election season officially began this week with the opening of qualifying Monday morning.

Qualifying started with a bang with seven people throwing their hats into the ring Aug. 26, which was the first day to sign up. Ed Barbee, who was the only candidate to announce his intentions of running prior to this week, said he was at City Hall at 8:31 and was the third person to qualify.

Barbee is running for mayor pro tem. The incumbent mayor pro tem, Loretta Lipsey, qualified to run for re-election. She has served two terms in the position.

Mayor Gus Wilson also signed up to run again. Wilson is finishing his first term as Gray’s mayor.

Rick Tipton qualified to run for the District One council seat currently held by long-time incumbent David Tufts. Tufts also qualified to run for re-election Monday.

Benny Gray, who has held the District Two council position for a couple of decades, qualified for re-election, as did District Four Councilman Terry Favors.
