Jones County’s Jarquez Smith has been named the All-Middle Georgia GHSA boys’ basketball player of the year by The Macon Telegraph, adding to the postseason honors for the 6-9 center who has signed with Florida State.

Earlier, Smith was named the team’s MVP and best defensive player, co-player of the year in Region 2-AAAAA, and second team all-state by the Georgia Sportswriters Association.

The senior averaged 16.3 points, 12.4 rebounds and 7.5 blocks a game to lead the Greyhounds to the state playoffs for the first time since 2003. They lost to Richmond Hill in the opening round to finish 17-11.

Junior guard Brandon Wimberly received All-Middle Georgia honorable mention recognition, as did Lady Hounds’ senior guard Keke Roberts.
