The Jones County Youth Football League Mite all-stars defeated the host Thomson team 13-12 on penetration in triple overtime in the first round of the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament last Saturday.

The 9-10-year-old Hounds return to Thomson Saturday to face Bartow County in the semifinals at 11 a.m. A victory would send Jones County on to the championship game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Last Saturday’s game was a tight one all the way, reported coach Jamey Huckeba.

“During our first drive we realized we were playing 10-yard first downs, which is different than what we played all year and what we played during the district. Normally it is 8 yards in this age group,” he said. “Thomson had some great athletes with tons of speed, and they used that to their advantage on a field that was also wider than what we normally play on.”
