But they didn’t fare as well in the coin flip Wednesday afternoon to determine seeding for the Region 2-AAAAA Tournament, which Jones County will host next week.
The Greyhounds wound up as the third seed – Warner Robins is first and Northside second. The Jones County boys will play at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the opening round against the second seed from the east subregion – likely Lakeside-Evans or Grovetown, depending on the outcome of their games Friday.
Freshman Jerry Stephens, who finished with 16 points Tuesday, hit two key 3-point shots in the final overtime to build a lead for the Greyhounds, who had to play the final four minutes without star center Jarquez Smith, who fouled out.
Smith finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks for his third straight triple-double.
Brandon Wimberly led the Greyhounds with 19 points, and Dominique Collier played great defense on the Demons’ best shooter, Juvuan Shine, holding him to 11 points.
The Jones County girls lost to Warner Robins 44-33. They are the fourth seed from the west and will play east subregion top seed Evans in the opening round of the region tournament at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Gray.
