Or maybe it was more like a mountain, as in big senior pitcher Mackenzie Toler.
The left-hander, who has already signed to play at Mississippi State next year, struck out 11 in 14 innings and held Jones County to one hit in the opening game and five in the second for the 3-0, 5-1 doubleheader sweep to end the Lady Hounds’ season.
Toler also provided all of the offense Whitewater needed in the opening game with a three-run homer to deep right-center in the third inning.
“She’s big and strong and been there and done that,” Jones County coach Blake Lyons said of Toler. “They were state runners-up last year, and she did most of the pitching for them, so she’s accustomed to winning in the playoffs.”
The Lady Hounds finished the season with an 18-18-1 record. The Lady Wildcats improved to 24-10-1 and advanced to the Elite Eight in Columbus, where they were scheduled to open against Allatoona (26-9) on Thursday.
