The young and rebuilding Lady Hounds went through some growing pains last week in their first in-season tournament, winning twice, losing twice and tying once in the Brawl in the Fall they helped host.

Jones County started the week with a 2-1 victory over GMC in Milledgeville on Tuesday.

They opened their portion of the Brawl with an 8-0 win over Monticello on Wednesday, then lost and tied on Friday, falling 5-0 to Columbus and tying Rutland 7-7. They finished up the tournament on Saturday with a 7-6 win over Mary Persons and 3-2 loss to Crawford County.

That makes the Lady Hounds 4-3-1 on the season. This week they were to host GMC on Tuesday and Alcovy on Thursday at 6 p.m.

“We’re young and growing and making some mistakes right now,” coach Blake Lyons said of his team, which had only one senior in the starting lineup most of last week. The Lady Hounds are starting a freshman and six sophomores in most games, and another freshman, McKenzie Barnes, wound up pitching the final three games of the tournament when sophomore Kylie Bass was unable to go because of a sore arm.

“Kylie has pitched a lot over the summer and early in the season, so she’s come up a little sore. We need to find some more girls who can share the load so that we’ll have Kylie later in the season,” Lyons said. “McKenzie did a good job in her games, kept us close, so she has helped. We’ll probably try Kaitlin Woodward some and see if anyone else can help.”
