The Lady Hounds battled for a pair of one-run victories to open the season at Georgia College & State University last Saturday.

Jones County built an early 6-1 lead over Oconee County in the first game only to allow the Lady Warriors to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with some sloppy defense. But the Lady Hounds managed to hang on to finally win 11-10 in 11 innings.

In the second game, Jones County fell behind 3-0 but rallied with four runs in the third inning to down West Laurens 4-3.

“We played a good season in that first game,” coach Blake Lyons said. “I think we covered just about every situation you can imagine except being behind, and we handled that in the second game.

“We had some mistakes and errors, but the girls played hard and made plays when we had to have them. They showed a lot of intestinal fortitude to keep battling, especially in that 11-inning game. I liked that we did not let things going wrong get us down.”

He also liked that the Lady Hounds played better in the second game.

“The second game was better played by both teams. The pace was quicker and everything went a little smoother,” Lyons said.
