James Ira Youngblood, 47, was arrested Jan. 1 and charged with aggravated assault.
Jones County Sheriff Department Investigator Lt. Jimmy Black said the sheriff’s department received a call about the shooting at 1:05 a.m., New Year’s Day. He responded to the call to discover that 57-year-old James Franklin Newman had been shot in the abdomen.
“They were celebrating New Year’s Eve, and in some manner an altercation started between the two of them. It got physical, and Mr. Youngblood shot Mr. Newman,” Black said.
The investigator said alcohol was involved in the shooting, and the weapon used was a .357 pistol. He said Youngblood went to a neighbor’s house to call for help. The location of the shooting was a residence on Spring Drive, which runs off of Mountain Springs Road.
Black said no one else was at the residence when the shooting occurred. The case remains under investigation.
