Chief appraiser Linda Sibley told the Jones County Board of Assessors at their monthly meeting on Oct. 11 that most of the 800 appeals filed by property taxpayers this year have been settled either by her office or through hearings before the Board of Equalization.

“We have seven more appeals for the Board of Equalization to hear, so that means only one more day,” she said.

Sibley reported that four taxpayers are taking their appeals to Superior Court, and three more are considering going to court because they didn’t agree with the Board of Equalization’s decisions.

She said the Board of Equalization has made $4,303,254 in value changes after hearings concerning 319 parcels.

Board of Assessors Chairman Don Turner reported that Alma Pounds has resigned from the board. Pounds had been appointed earlier this year to replace Maurice Kitchens, who resigned because of changes in his work schedule. Turner said Pounds, who had served on the board previously, indicated she was stepping down due to difficulties in attending required state training sessions.

Turner said he has spoken with Jones County Commissioner Chap Nelson, who represents the district in question, and that Nelson said he would work quickly to nominate a replacement.

Sibley told the board that her staff has finished work on the 2012 taxes and is already working on 2013.
