The first quarterly meeting of Jones County People Looking Ahead Now for 2013 lasted longer than planned but covered a great deal of information.

The topic that appeared to garner the most attention of the Feb. 2 meeting’s attendees was that of alcohol sales in Jones County. The Board of Commissioners voted at their final meeting of 2012 to place the question of Sunday sales of beer and wine on the March ballot but recently amended that decision at the behest of Board of Education members. The renewal of the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Jones County was already scheduled to be on the March ballot, and the members feared the inclusion of alcohol sales would complicate the issue.

Saturday’s meeting was held at Shooters Grill, and attendees enjoyed a delicious breakfast before the session began. The first item on the agenda was the election of new officers. Ted Stone was presented as the new PLAN chairman. Stone retired as Board of Education chairman in 2010 after serving in the position for 33 years.

He follows the former PLAN chairman, Chris Smarr, who led the grassroots organization for two years and will continue to serve as secretary/treasurer of the group.

Deloras Moon was presented as vice chairman, and the entire slate of officers was unanimously accepted.
