I was raised in First Baptist Church in Hartsville, S.C., where I attended preschool, was a Cub Scout, of which my mom was the leader, and went on to be a Boy Scout and patrol leader of the same troop my uncles were in and my grandfather started.
Soon after college, I went on to be the assistant scoutmaster of the same troop, receiving the spark plug award. My grandfather was partners in the family-owned funeral home until his passing and was the secretary of the Masonic Lodge for 35 years, deacon in the church and Sunday School teacher for 45 years.
My uncle presently owns the fourth-generation funeral home founded in 1915 with the help of his son, who is the sitting mayor of Hartsville, S.C. Both have been named Hartsville’s business persons of the year. My mother worked as an assistant teacher to the trainable mentally disabled for 29 years.
My father is a retired production manager for Bausch Lomb, and his father was the lead accountant for Tampa International Airport.
I’m married to Bobbi Tingen, who works as a paraprofessional at Jones County Pre–K. We have two girls, Mallory Grace, 10, and Sara Elizabeth, 6.
