Jones County’s Teacher of the Year was announced during a ceremony held at Turner Woods Elementary School last week, and the only way to describe the reaction of the winner was surprised.

The finale of the Nov. 8 event was the announcement by School Superintendent William Mathews of Jones County’s 2012-13 Teacher of the Year, Kip Welch.

The honoree is a ninth-grade literature and broadcast journalism teacher at Jones County High School.

Mathews was the master of ceremonies for the event. Turner Woods Elementary students Jarett Denson and Maggie Carson led the Pledge of Allegiance. The National Anthem was performed by Elizabeth Pecorilli, a sixth-grade student at Gray Station Middle School. Dames Ferry Elementary School Chorus and the Jones County High School Jazz Band provided musical entertainment for the event.

School Improvement Director Estelle Jacobs organized the program for the ceremony. She explained the selection process.

“Each nominee submitted an in-depth application and were interviewed by a four-judge panel,” Jacobs said.
