Gray’s City Council took care of a lot of business in a short period of time at Monday’s monthly meeting.

After dealing with housekeeping items, such as approval of the minutes of past meetings and accounts payable at the May 6 meeting, Mayor Gus Wilson quickly moved into agenda items, which consisted totally of new business items.

The first to be heard from was Ben Elbe, representing Peachtree Housing Communities, a company interested in building an apartment building in the city limits.

Elbe said the project will span 7½ acres off Highway 18 East at Office Park Drive, and the development would consist of 60-64 units. He said the original plan was for a senior development, but new information may mean the development could also include families.

The estimated cost of the development is $5 million. The buildings would be brick and would have no vinyl siding. Elbe said it would have a community room for activities and a full-time property manager and maintenance person.

He said the development will include green space, and benefits to Gray would be an increased tax base and tap-on fees.

The mayor welcomed Elbe to Gray.

“We need affordable housing and appreciate your plan,” he said.
