Jones County Sheriff’s deputies and fire department personnel responded to a vehicle fire at the corner of Joycliff Road and Gray Highway at 4:27 p.m. April 29.

Deputy Christopher Shurley reported that Eugene Rockmore and Bryan Pitts were pulling a trailer loaded with a lawn mower and other yard tools toward Macon on Gray Highway when the 2005 Dodge pickup truck they were driving began to smoke. They were attempting to pull into the gas station parking lot when the truck stopped. It was in the entrance to the parking lot, but the trailer was still in the roadway on Joycliff Road.

Rockmore got out to open the hood, but when he did so, the fire flashed up and the two men ran from the vehicle.

The engine compartment and cab of the truck were engulfed in flames when fire department personnel arrived and extinguished the fire. The trailer and lawn equipment were not damaged.

The truck owner, Bobby Daniels of B.R. Daniels Enterprises, came and retrieved the trailer and undamaged lawn equipment.
