The Jones County Board of Education has declared the months of August and September as a time to step forward and support local teachers.

The ‘Support Our Teachers Fund-Raiser Months’ is the idea of Board of Education Chairman Ginger Bailey. The former teacher said educators will experience a reduction in pay over the coming year with 10 scheduled furlough days but will still put in the long hours necessary to get their jobs done.

“Teachers continue to dip into their own pockets to fund materials they need for their classrooms and to meet the needs of their students,” Bailey stated. “The Board of Education is asking each school to hold a special fund-raiser to support the teachers in that school and all money raised will be divided and placed in teachers’ accounts for them to use to buy what they need in their classrooms.”

She said teachers are the ways and means by which children gain knowledge and become prepared to have a successful life. Educational revenues have been cut on federal, state, and local levels.
