Twice the Lady ’Hounds lost one-run games to the Mustangs, the lone team from Region 3A-AAAA the eventual state champs couldn’t beat.
And when they met for the first time this season last Tuesday in Gray, it appeared Ola’s mojo was still in effect when pitcher Savannah McHellon belted a three-run homer to left center in the top of the third inning to snap a scoreless tie.
But then the Lady ’Hounds answered with five runs on a pair of infield hits, a bloop single, four errors and a walk in the bottom of the inning, and Ola’s spell was broken.
Senior Harley Jennette held the Mustangs to three singles over the final four innings and Jones County won 5-3 to begin a sweep of nine games in a busy week in Gray.
The Lady ’Hounds improved to 15-1 on the season and 4-0 in the subregion, won their division of the Brawl in the Fall tournament and moved up one notch to first in the coaches’ poll. They were to play at No. 2 Union Grove on Tuesday.
