Debra Vinson Brown killed herself last week, the day before she was scheduled to be arraigned for the murder of her husband.

Jones County investigators are completing their reports and conducting their final interviews. Brown’s suicide effectively closed the murder investigation of Mitch Brown, whom she shot and killed July 9. Debra Brown was arrested for the murder the same day the shooting took place. She was subsequently released on a $250,000 bond July 21 over the protests of prosecutors and investigating officers.

Deputies responded to a call Sept. 11 on Creekside Drive concerning a woman who was threatening to shoot herself, which turned out to be Brown. She was taken to the Coliseum Hospital for evaluation and was released Sept. 13, the same day she took her life.

Capt. Earl Humphries of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department said officers responded to a call to Brown’s residence the afternoon of Sept. 13 concerning a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He said, when officers arrived, she was deceased.
