Whitewater, the school that eliminated the Lady Hounds in the second round of the playoffs, finished third.
Now in Region 4-AAAAA, Union Grove started its run in the Elite Eight double-elimination finals in Columbus with a 7-0 victory over South Paulding last Thursday afternoon, then beat Whitewater 1-0 on Thursday night.
Pope beat Greenbrier, which was the champion in Jones County’s new Region 2-AAAAA this season, 7-1 and Loganville 1-0 on Thursday.
In other first-round games, Loganville downed Northgate 4-3 and Whitewater topped Allatoona 4-1.
In losers’ bracket play on Friday, Greenbrier eliminated Northgate, last year’s state champion, 12-11, and South Paulding eliminated Allatoona 5-2 in the first round. In the second round, Whitewater eliminated Greenbrier 11-8, and Loganville eliminated South Paulding 5-2. Whitewater then eliminated Loganville 3-2.
