Commission Chairman Preston Hawkins began by thanking the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for the half-million-dollar grant that funded the majority of the project.
He also introduced the men who donated the land, Jimmy Goolsby and T.J. Heath.
“This property is somewhat historic,” Goolsby said. “It once belonged to the Cook family and was eventually sold to some developers. After coming into my hands, it now belongs to the county.
“In my opinion, this is God’s plan.”
Hawkins said he was grateful to Goolsby, who even gave the county the opportunity to pick the site.
“I thank them for what they have done for the citizens of this county,” he said. “I also want to thank Ann Carter, who is the senior center site manager, and all of the county departments that made this possible.”
Hawkins mentioned Freddie Wiggins and the water department, John Lowe and the public works department, Bobby Bonner and the maintenance department, along with Matt Goins of the recreation department, who all worked on the site.
