Dennis Woolfolk was concerned.

His basketball team came out of the Christmas break and was beaten 63-57 by Veterans in a non-region game at home last Friday, running its losing streak to three games.

Senior center Jarquez Smith had a good game, scoring a game-high 24 points and getting plenty of rebounds and blocked shots, but he had little help.

“Brandon Wimberly hit some shots (scoring 16 points), but that was about it. I was especially disappointed with Doug West. It was his kind of game with a lot of bumping and banging, but he didn’t bring it,” Woolfolk said after the game.

“Jarquez can’t do it alone inside. Doug’s got to play better. We open up in the region tomorrow. We host the tournament this year. We can’t wait until the end of the season to start playing. We’ve got to go now.”

West and his teammates got the message. The senior forward scored a team-high 18 points and played tough defense on Saturday night to lead the Greyhounds to a 52-39 victory over Houston County to start out 1-0 in Region 2-AAAAA.
