GRAY: Annette Margaret Batchelor Childs, 87, of Old Highway 11, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, in a local nursing home. The family greeted friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Bridges Funeral Home in Gray. Funeral services are being held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Wayside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Don Hendrix officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Childs, the daughter and last surviving child of eight children of the late Henry Paul Batchelor and Lillie Mae Dame Batchelor, was born in Jones County on Oct. 26, 1925, and had lived here all of her life. After completing her education, she worked at Robins Field and later at the canning plant in Wayside, where she met her future husband, Jack H. Childs Sr. After their marriage in 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Childs moved to Wayside, where they restored the old train depot into a home for their family. Mrs. Childs would help her husband run the family business, Childs General Store. She would also later serve as postmistress for the Wayside Post Office until it closed in the early 1980s.

Mrs. Childs was very active at Wayside Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and helped present pageants during the Christmas season. She loved her God, her church and her family, and made sure that other children could get to Sunday school and to Vacation Bible School. Mrs. Childs also loved to work in her vegetable garden and watch things grow. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Howard Childs Sr.

Mrs. Childs is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janette and Gerald Bryant; sons and daughter-in-law, Paul and Martha Childs and Jack H. Childs Jr.; grandchildren and their spouses, Erin and Parks McMichael Jr., Leslie and Matt Corcione, Michael and Lindsey Bryant, Paul Jordan Childs Jr. and Claire Lauren Childs; and by her great-grandchildren, Emily Ann Gant, Samuel Parks McMichael III and Abigail Grace Bryant.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Wayside Presbyterian Church, 1467 Old Highway 11, Gray, GA 31032.

The family may be contacted at the residence of Paul Childs at 146 Stone Gables Drive in Gray.
