Jones County LIfe Chain participants lined up on both sides of Gray Highway Sunday afternoon to take a stand in opposition of abortion and support alternatives such as adoption. The event was the second for the local effort and the planning of the 2014 Life Chain is already underway.
Life Chain is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life Americans taking a stand in their community for an end to abortion, and the event took place in Gray Jan. 20.
The community’s first Life Chain demonstration took place in 2012, and an estimated 200 people lined both sides of Gray Highway with signs asking for an end to abortion.
The turnout this past weekend was not up to those numbers, but the people who did line the highway made up for it with their excitement and dedication.
Roe v. Wade became law in 1973 and continues to be a controversial issue. That Supreme Court decision overturned a Texas interpretation of abortion law and made abortion legal in the United States.
In 2012, over 1,500 cities and towns held Life Chains in over 1,700 locations. The first event took place in 1987, in the small sister towns of Yuba City and Marysville, Calif.
Dr. Steve Albanese, pastor of First Baptist Church of Gray, was the chairman of Jones County’s Life Chain and said plans are already being made for next year’s event.
