Following a closed session at Monday’s meeting, council members voted unanimously to give Frank and Bonnie Duke $27,000 to reimburse them for the cleanup of their lake and legal fees.
The first spill took place Feb. 22, 2011, and the second 14 months later, May 7, 2012. At first, City officials denied the spill polluted Duke’s lake, but, after intervention by State Rep. Susan Holmes following the second spill, the Environmental Protection Division got involved.
The city now has a maintenance program in place to eliminate the frequent spills.
After the vote, Mayor Gus Wilson apologized to the Dukes for the ordeal.
