This house on Plum Steet in Haddock was the first of six structures recently demolished by the county under its Abandoned and Dilapidated Building ordinance.
Environmental code enforcement Officer Tiffany Davis is the driving force behind the demolition of the abandoned and dilapidated buildings that came down Feb. 4-7. The first building was torn down on Plum Street in Haddock and the next was around the corner on Peach Street.
The four other buildings that were demolished were on Aaron Drive, Bowen Hill Road, Joycliff Road, and Bethune Avenue. The estimated cost of the project was $18,700, which does not include the cost of dumping the debris at the landfill.
Davis explained that the process for the demolition of the buildings is not fast. Jones County’s Abandoned and Dilapidated Housing ordinance was adopted in 2006, and in 2009 the commissioners voted to allow the complaints to be anonymous, which Davis said was a good move.
Complaints can be made through the code enforcement office or through planning and zoning. After a complaint is received, a building inspector, usually accompanied by Davis, does the first inspection and any code violations found are documented.
Then the property is turned over to her for enforcement of the ordinance.
