The Jones County varsity baseball team has struggled at times this season, but the freshmen and sophomores playing for the ninth-grade and junior varsity teams have excelled.

Both won their end of season tournaments last weekend to finish the year with identical 15-1 records.

“We have some good young guys, and coach (Chris) Martin and coach (Brandon) Davis have done a good job with them this year,” head coach Barry Veal said.

The junior varsity team finished the regular season with a 7-5 victory in Perry last Wednesday.

Cody Compton, Lonnie Anderson and Tracy Jackson all had two hits apiece, and Anderson, Compton and Chandler Ramage shared the pitching, Martin reported.

The Hounds hosted the junior varsity tournament on Friday and Saturday. They blanked Veterans 11-0 on Friday, then downed Houston County 10-1 in Saturday’s championship game.
