Lady Hounds top seed for region tourney

The Jones County girls downed Houston County 3-2 in a makeup match on Monday to finish the regular season at 13-1 overall and claim the top seed in the subregion with a 7-1 record.

They were to begin play in the Region 2-AAAAA Tennis Tournament at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in Macon.

The Greyhounds lost to Houston 4-1 to fall to 6-8 overall and 1-7 in the subregion. The boys’ portion of the region tournament will follow the girls’ play.

Coach Alisha Gordon changed her lineup for Monday’s match, moving No. 3 singles player Sarah Pounds up to No. 1 and dropping No. 1 Kaley Clay and No. 2 Jazmine Washington both down a notch.

The move worked out, with Washington able to down Houston’s Lindsay Randolph 6-4, 6-4 after Pounds and Clay both lost – Pounds 1-6, 0-6 to Rachel Bridges and Clay 6-1, 1-6, 6-7 to Chen Hui Bergl.

The Lady Hounds wrapped up the victory in doubles, with Olivia Lane and Ashley Mills downing Aubrey Langston and Kara Scully 7-5, 6-3 and Logan Bowden and McKenzie Barnes outlasting Madison Defoor and Teresa Tran 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
