Additional flu vaccine may be needed this year

Jones County’s Board of Health held its quarterly meeting last month and discussed the need for a new fee schedule to keep up with expenses.

Environmental specialist Floyd Comer said the new schedule would have to be approved by the Board of Commissioners before being put in place. The specialist said attorney William Noland is working on a policy to include payment of health department inspection fees in the requirements for county business licenses for restaurants.

Health board chairman Rooster Cogburn said, after the county adopts the policy, he would take the request to the city to include in their business license policy. Comer said his goal is to have the new policies in place by January of 2014.

Jones County Nurse Manager Sherri Mills gave a nursing report. She said the number of breast examines and immunizations are up, and the health department distributed 20 car seats since February. She said the health department would have a booth at the Daylily Festival, checking blood pressures and distributing information.

Linda Harrell presented the budget report. This year’s budget is lower, partly because of her retirement as office manager. She has not been replaced and continues to work part time on a contracted basis.

The 2014 budget for the department is $458,003, and it was unanimously approved by board members.
