The Lady Hounds outhit Veterans 10-9 on Friday but still lost 5-2 in a preseason scrimmage game in Gray.

“It went about like I expected for a first time out,” coach Blake Lyons said.

“We hit enough to score more runs, but it was a matter of stringing them together, and they did a better job of that than we did. We were also trying a couple of things with some new defenses and some things with our pitchers and catchers that we’ll get better at, but I was not at all disappointed.”

The Lady Hounds had only two days of full team practice after tryouts before the scrimmage game.

“I wanted to wait and play the scrimmage game a week later (this week), but Veterans already had its season opener scheduled for then and couldn’t change it,” Lyons said. “But this gave us a week to work on things we saw in the scrimmage before we play our first game.”

Jones County opens the regular season Monday against West Laurens in Dublin. The JV girls play at 4:15 p.m. and the varsity girls at 5:55.
