The Jones County girls got their 2013 season off to a fast start last week, winning their first five games, including going undefeated in the Houston County Brawl in the Fall tournament.

“We’re playing all right,” coach Blake Lyons said of the quick start. “We were playing some smaller schools, not to say they don’t have good teams, and we played the way we should against them. I’m very pleased with how we’ve started.”

Junior left-hander Kylie Bass started and took the victory in each game, not giving up a run in the 24 2/3 innings she pitched. She also did not walk anyone while striking out 34 and surrendering only 10 hits.

Sophomore right-hander McKenzie Barnes also pitched in three games, giving up eight runs on nine hits and seven walks and striking out four in 8 1/3 innings.

“Kylie is throwing real well. As long as she wants the ball, we’ll give it to her, but at the same time we want her to still have plenty left in October, so when we can we’ll use McKenzie and get her more experience,” Lyons said. “Kylie was sharp, and for the most part McKenzie was good.”
