Investigator Gerry Nelson with the Jones County Sheriff’s Department said a man was picking up cans along Highway 49 Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 24, and came across the device. He said it was located in a ditch not far from the sheriff’s department substation between Yukon and Pamela drives.
The man went to the substation, and Nelson said he happened to be there. The investigator walked over to the ditch with the man to look at what he had found.
“It looked like an explosive device. I called patrol to divert traffic and notified command of the situation. I also called the Macon-Bibb County Bomb Squad,” he said.
Nelson said the bomb squad came right away and disabled the device. He said the investigation continues, and agencies such as the ATF are being contacted to determine the next step.
