Francisco Hernandez, 47, of Joliet, Ill., was pronounced dead at the scene by Jones County Deputy coroner Bill Wright. The shooting took place on the Piedmont Wildlife Refuge almost to the Putnam County line.
Wright said the accident took place shortly after 10:30 a.m., Oct. 19. He said Hernandez was shot in the head and died instantly. When the deputy coroner arrived at the scene, he said a group of about 10 hunters were with the victim.
He said the scene was on refuge property but was accessed from Bradley Drive.
The deputy coroner said the accident happened about one-quarter mile down the trail.
Jones County Sheriff’s Department Chief Investigator Earl Humphries said the case remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department and by the Department of Natural Resources.
