School Superintendent William Mathews began last week’s Board of Education meeting with an update of the construction of the new elementary school.

The superintendent said work has begun on the footings for what will be the new Gray Elementary School building on Highway 18 East. He said the progress is not noticeable yet, but construction is on schedule for being ready for students by the second semester of the 2014 school year.

Mathews’ report at the Nov. 12 meeting continued with kudos to Wells Elementary School for the hosting of the Teacher of the Year celebration.

“It was a good program, and we had an excellent slate of candidates. We have so many teachers who are worthy of that honor,” he said.

Mathews said Jones County’s 2014 Teacher of the Year, Angela Jones, would represent the county in the state competition. He added that he is looking for ways to showcase the Teacher of the Year winner throughout the year.
