The trial of a Jones County man facing an involuntary manslaughter charge appears to be on track for the last week of February following pretrial motions in Superior Court this week.

Waylon Earl Goodson was arrested June 10, 2013, in connection to the May 6 fatal shooting of Brittany Lynn Grizzle. The first pretrial motions for the trial were heard Jan. 2 in front of Superior Court Judge Hugh Wingfield.

District Attorney Fred Bright announced that the state is ready to go forward with the motions, but he suggested the same judge who is going to preside over the trial should be making decisions about the motions.

Wingfield said he would not be on the bench for the February trial week, although that would have been his regular trial week. He said he has a connection to the Goodson family through a friend of his son and feels it best if he is not the trial judge for the case.

Wingfield said he agreed with Bright about the trial judge and would only consider routine motions. He said anything evidentiary should be heard by Chief Judge William Prior, who will be swapping trial weeks with Wingfield.
