GRAY: Mary Elizabeth Butts, 75, of Washburn Drive, departed this Earth peacefully on Feb. 15, 2014. Visitation was held from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., prior to an 11:00 a.m. funeral service, on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the Old Sanctuary at Gray United Methodist Church. Burial followed at 4:00 p.m. in the family plot at Arnoldsville Cemetery in Arnoldsville.

Mrs. Butts was born in Telfair County on Jan. 1, 1939, and was the daughter of Chester Swain Sr. and Alice McDuffie Swain. She graduated from Workmore High School and earned an Associate's degree from South Georgia College in Douglas. She married Paul Butts in November 1961, and in 1964, gave birth to her only child, Susan. Mary Elizabeth and Paul moved to Gray in 1965, and she worked for Sears in the accounting department, at Middle Georgia Hospital in several positions, and then for many years in physicians' offices in Macon.

After retiring, she and Paul enjoyed spending time with their family and traveling extensively. They visited all 50 states, eight Canadian provinces, and went on several cruises. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with and spoiling members of her family. She was most proud of her daughter, Susan, who is an accomplished teacher, and of her grandchildren, who are both students at the University of Georgia, and never tired of telling anyone she knew all about them.

She was a member of Gray United Methodist Church, the Bible Sunday school class, the Middle Georgia Hospital Retirees Group, and the Red Hats. She was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Wooten of McRae.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul Butts of Gray; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Mark Williams of Stockbridge; grandchildren, Allie and David, also of Stockbridge; brother, Chester Swain Jr. of McRae; aunt, Mabel Berner of Bradenton, Fla.; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
