Chairman Matt Sires presented the annual Hamilton-Williams Preservation Award to the Newby family Feb. 6. The award was presented at History & Heritage’s banquet held at Trish Ann’s Tea Room in Haddock.
The award was the first to be presented to a family, and it was accepted by William Jr. and his son, Aubrey, who represent four generations of Newbys who have lived in the historic community of James.
Sires said William Sr. and his wife moved to James in 1963 and passed their love of the community to their children. William Jr. and his wife Cathy purchased the James-Garner House in 2009. Since that time, they restored and live in the home, which has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Aubrey and his wife Jennifer purchased the Kinslow-Pitts-Etheridge home in 2010. The home has been renovated and they are raising their three children in the community of James.
