MACON: John J. Berkner, 73, of Briarwood Circle, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, in a local hospital. The family received friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Bridges Funeral Home in Gray. A memorial service was held at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, at the residence of Jay Berkner at 178 Wheehaw Road in Macon.

Mr. Berkner was born in Macon on Dec. 1, 1940, and had lived here his entire life. He was the son of the late Alvin Alton Berkner and Mary Lucile Bass Berkner. Upon completing his education, Mr. Berkner enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served with honor. In his civilian life, he retired as an operator from Southern Natural Gas. Mr. Berkner was of the Baptist faith and loved baseball, sharing his love of the game with many Middle Georgia youth as a coach.

Mr. Berkner is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Elizabeth S. Berkner; sons and daughter-in-law, Jay Berkner, John A. and Aretha Berkner and Robert Berkner; and by his grandchildren, Cody Berkner, Nathan Berkner, Staci Berkner and Aubri Lawler.
