This year’s celebration of Gray’s annual Daylily Festival is beginning a little earlier this year with a kickoff event Saturday.

The Daylily Kickoff, Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Carol’s Park, located next to the Jones County Courthouse in downtown Gray. The event will introduce Lily, the new mascot for the Daylily Festival, and winners of the Daylily T-shirt design contest will be announced. The celebration will include refreshments and live entertainment by L’il George.

Main Street Gray Director Haley Watson is leading her first Daylily Festival. She said 67 entries were received for the T-shirt design contest and three winners would be announced at the kickoff. She said the design of one winner will be used on Daylily Dash shirts and two designs were actually combined for the Daylily Festival shirts.

Watson said the Gray Fire Department will have the city’s first fire truck, Little Red, at the kickoff and volunteer firefighters will have an obstacle course demonstration. She said Bradley Baptist Church would be cooking hamburgers, hot dogs, and bratwurst.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse are expected to make an appearance at the kickoff, courtesy of Ole Times Country Buffet, and face painting and snow cones will be available for children.
