Preseason practice officially opened last Friday morning, but for the Greyhounds it was pretty much business as normal.

That’s because the Jones County football players have been meeting three or four mornings a week since school let out for voluntary workouts – which included weight training, conditioning and running plays on the field as they learn the new spread offense being installed by new coach Justin Rogers.

“It’s pretty much the same old routine for us,” Rogers said. “We’ve had a good turnout all summer, and the guys have worked hard and made a lot of progress. The first week of mandatory practice is really the same as we’ve been doing since you can’t go in pads yet.”

Things changed a bit this week as the workouts shifted to afternoons since the coaches had to begin reporting to school for the teacher meetings and training required the week before school starts.

The big change comes on Friday, when the Georgia High School Association allows schools to begin full contact practices.
