MACON: Jerry Lee Bowden, 70, passed away unexpectedly at his beloved hunting camp, the “Bonderosa,” in Macon, Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014. He formerly resided in Birmingham, Ala., and Lawrenceville. A celebration of his life was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at Union Chapel Evangelistic Church, 5500 Marion Road, Macon. The Rev. Billy Lowe officiated.

Mr. Bowden was born Nov. 21, 1943, in Macon, the fourth of five sons of the late William Edward Charles Bowden and Nannie Mae Hattaway Bowden.

Jerry began his much-loved piloting career with Bill Woods Beechcraft in September of 1969. He was instrumental in the formation of the Bellsouth Corporate Flight Operations as he continued his piloting career, rising to the position of their chief pilot. He earned Bellsouth’s prestigious White Hat award through his leadership and success of the aviation response to Hurricane Andrew. Jerry served businesses as a leader and mentor to dozens of pilots and technicians over the course of his aviation career.

He was a member of Wolihin Lodge #390 in Macon, Scottish Rite in Birmingham, Ala., and the Zamora Shrine Temple, Irondale, Ala. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gentleman farming. He also enjoyed amateur radio, KG4KUJ, and watching NASCAR. Mr. Bowden was preceded in death by a brother, William Darrell Bowden.

Mr. Bowden is survived by his wife of 34 years, Phyllis Bowden; his beloved son, Parker Martin Bowden; brothers and sisters-in-law, Benjamin and Nell Bowden, Ed “Carl” Bowden and Wayne and Paula Bowden; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Bowden; numerous nieces and nephews; and by his beloved grand dog, Smoke.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 5962 Zebulon Road, PMB 359, Macon, GA 31210.
