Jones County is being considered as one of the first counties to be accepted into the Georgia Department of Community Affairs PlanFirst Program.

The county was recently informed that it was chosen for a site visit Aug. 27, which will be conducted by a panel of representatives of the DCA and other state agencies. That visit will determine if Jones County will be PlanFirst designated.

A group of community leaders and stakeholders led by county administrator Mike Underwood met Aug. 8 and again Aug. 13 to put together an agenda for the presentation.

The first meeting was to get organized and the second got down to specifics about what type of presentation would be done and its content. The consensus was to put together a PowerPoint and let members of the community present different aspects of the program in their respective fields.

For example, zoning officer Tim Pitrowski will talk about the rezoning process, digital zoning maps, and capital improvement elements. Jones County/Gray Chamber of Commerce and Development Authority Executive Director Kathyjo Gordon will talk about the industrial park and chamber projects, and Gray Mayor Pro Tem Ed Barbee will give an update about a roundabout proposed to replace a four-way stop in one of the city’s major intersections.
