Summer reading is in full swing at the Jones County Library with Space Week featuring two big events.

The library was abuzz June 18 with the Georgia College and State University Star Lab set up in the foyer and NASA Educational Specialist Steven Smith pretty much mesmerizing those in the children’s section before or after their turns in the Star Lab.

Smith works at the Johnson Space Center in Houston and was able to combine his library presentation with a visit with his family in Gray. In addition to talking to the children about NASA’s upcoming space programs, he had them building habitats for living in space.

The GCSU Star Lab is a portable planetarium that shows students constellations in the sky, pointing out their locations and including the history behind their discovery.

The Star Lab holds 30 at a time and gave three presentations during its Jones County visit.

At the same time those events were taking place, the library staff continued being busy taking in and checking out books. There were students studying in the back, and one father and son found a secluded spot to read a book together.

Library Branch Manager Julie King said, as of June 18, the summer reading program had 1,038 participants signed up.

King expressed her gratitude to Ruth Eilers, director of academic outreach from GCSU, and her crew for setting up and giving programs in their Star Lab. She also thanked Jones County School System Literacy Specialist Kristen Beaver for giving out books about space at the event.

“And thank you to Steven Smith, education specialist from NASA who gave a wonderful talk on our space program and had the kids make their own space colonies,” she said. “What a wonderful day in the neighborhood.”

The Jones County Library is located at 146 Railroad Street in Gray. The hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
